After the big hoopla with the Instagram algorithm changes yesterday, Instagram announced today that soon you’ll be able to upload videos up to 60 seconds. In a similar light to the algorithm, it will be rolling out over time.

In the last six months, the time people spent watching video on Instagram increased by more than 40 percent. As part of our continued commitment to video, you’ll soon have the flexibility to tell your story in up to 60 seconds. The video above features members of the incredible community of emerging video creators on Instagram. And longer videos also mean more diverse stories from the accounts you love, whether it’s Selena Gomez (@selenagomez) hanging out with friends or beauty star Bretman Rock’s (@bretmanrock) latest makeup tutorial. For iOS, we’re also bringing back the ability to make videos out of multiple clips from your camera roll. To learn more about multi-clip video on iOS, check out help.instagram.com. Longer video on Instagram begins rolling out today and will be available for everyone in the coming months. Multi-clip video is available this week as part of Instagram for iOS version 7.19 in Apple’s App Store.

I’m open to the change but I don’t know that I’d watch many 60 second videos. They’d have to be good. As with the other changes, I’m open and happy to see how it plays out.

Instagram is changing

…but not yet. News hit that Instagram was going to be using a new algorithm for it’s feed and for some reason today everyone was in a panic. If you logged on to Instagram you saw the “turn on notifications” posts continuously throughout the day.

It all started because Instagram started to introduce the algorithm to a small amount of people for testing, which they had said would be rolled out over months. Someone took the news and ran with it because everyone assumed it was happening immediately. After so many posts even Instagram had to make a statement via Twitter:

It’s not surprising that the change is being made given the popularity of the platform and the ownership by Facebook. The algorithm is much like the Facebook feed and a lot less like Twitter.

I get why a lot of people are up in arms. My first instinct was of disappointment but as a daily social media user and consultant I get it. As a Twitter fan myself I love the timeliness of the feed but I get that Instagram is doing what’s best for their business. Currently Instagram doesn’t provide analytics tools (except video views). While it took them a while to provide the information there was news that they are working on business tools with insights, which will be available in the coming months.

I’m excited to see what happens. I’m open minded but I really hope they keep the bones and essence of what people like about Instagram.

Happy Thursday! It’s Easter/Holy Week and today I’m sharing some photos of my nephew because he’s just too adorable. This time last year he was a tiny little preemie.

I joined in 2008 and I’d have to say it’s my favorite social media platform. I learn so much and love how current events can be live tweeted. I also like it to live tweet during a TV show. haha. This was my first tweet.

I’m so thankful for Twitter. As they continue to try and make the platform work, I hope they always stay true to what Twitter is. 140 character conversations.
