5 Things Friday

April 15, 2016

Happy Friday! It’s going to be a great weekend. I’m heading down to my favorite city, San Diego, tomorrow to see some friends and as usual I’m going to Disneyland. My annual pass expires on April 26 so this will be my last time using it. I’m sad to have to let it go but the cost is so high and now that I live in the Bay Area I don’t get to go as often. It’s the adult thing to do…the kid in me is having a fit. lol Joking but not really.

Some things to know about today:

  1. Pray for Japan. A 7.0 earthquake struck Kyushi Island, after being hit with a 6.2 quake two days earlier. Natural disasters like this are tough. There really is nothing you can do when mother nature hits. I pray for Japan and for those who are assisting during this time.
  2. Facebook’s F8 Conference was this week and they announced a lot of things. You can read the full list here: Everything announced at Facebook’s F8 conference. Great for businesses: they announced they will now let businesses deliver automated customer support (chatbots).
  3. In other Facebook related news, Stephen Hawking, Mark Zuckerberg, Yuri Milner Launch $100M Space Project Called Breakthrough Starshot. The goal is to reach the nearest star system, Alpha Centauri, in a span of 20 years. The reason why you should know about this is: ” In a report by Space.com, Yuri Milner, Breakthrough Initiative and DST Global Founder, said that their project “is a program of research and innovation exploring the questions of life in the universe.” He said exploring the universe doesn’t mean just the extraterrestrials, it also involves going to outer space to benefit the human race.” via Nature World News If we see this in our lifetime, that would be amazing.
  4. The 2016 NFL schedule is out. For fellow football fans who can’t wait for football to return like me, this is great news. The Carolina Panthers will open the season in Denver for the first Thursday Night Football game of the year, which with the Twitter NFL announcement earlier this month you can watch it live from anywhere you can access your Twitter feed. What I’m most excited about is the Saints in San Diego (my favorite teams in the NFL – I’m a Saints fan but living in San Diego made me a Chargers fan…yeah I know, odd) on Sunday Oct. 2. I guess I know where we’ll be celebrating my husbands birthday this year, our favorite city! Score!

  5. If you don’t have a lot planned for this weekend and you need something to watch, this week the Mindy Project returned to Hulu and the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is back on Netflix. “Hashbrown no filter.”

A little bonus: The Denver Nuggets changed it up at their game this week with the Lion King Cam. So much cuteness to start your weekend.

Snapchat 2.0

April 6, 2016

When it comes to social media I’ll try pretty much anything. I downloaded Snapchat back in May 2014 but like many others I had no idea what it was for so I didn’t really start using it until last year when my sister mentioned the story and I gave it another try. What I like most about it is the one on one interactions you have with people and that it’s a more casual and non-staged (mostly) platform. Here’s a great breakdown of how to use Snapchat by Wired.

My favorite features are the geofilters and the lenses. These are a few of my latest faves:

I don’t know who comes up with them, but there are some good ones. Snapchat users spend an average of about 30 minutes every day on the popular app, according to new data. Those are the basics but what I’m writing about today are the new features that were released last week. Here is the official blog: Snapchat 2.0 and here is the breakdown:

  • Auto-Advance Stories: Makes watching stories much easier. Each time you finish viewing a Story, the next user’s will now play automatically. Tap to click through, swipe left to skip to the next person, or pull down to exit.
  • Pictures: Selecting the picture icon above the keyboard allows you to send multiple images to your friends at once.
  • Chat 2.0: You can chat with a friend live, just start talking or start a video call. The video camera icon lets you video-chat with your friends. It’s like Skype plus more: Once the call starts, friends can simultaneously send texts, pictures, and audio messages within the same feed.
  • Stickers: Part of the Chat 2.0 are the plethora of stickers. The smiley-face icon on the right gives you access to 297 cartoon stickers.

With that they also updated their Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, which they say is “making some things clearer, and building foundations for awesome new products to come. Check out our new Privacy Center for more on that!”

Powerpuff Yourselfie

April 5, 2016

The Powerpuff Girls are making a comeback in a fun way, Powerpuff Yourself. In high school I was a Powerpuff Girl fan so in the spirit of wasting time on the Internet, I went ahead and “Powerpuffed” myself and my husband. Fun times. haha

I had to go with the “Starbucks” because I’m a self proclaimed “addict” and I went with the flannel, shades and notebook for him because if you know him it’s spot on.

If you have some free time and want to create yourself, I say do it!

Poshmark

March 30, 2016

I joined Poshmark last year but I hadn’t really given it a try until I saw this article on Refinery 29: I Made $4,000 On Poshmark — & Then Needed An Intervention. While this article was about the writers obsession it still brought it to my attention that you can make a good amount of money selling stuff that was just sitting in your closet, something I had been putting off out of procrastination and my pack rat tendencies (more of that in a another post…someday).

What I like about Poshmark is that you can do everything from your phone. I used to sell items on eBay but with the popularity and amount of items on the site, I gave up. When I downloaded Poshmark I realize a lot of people use the app, but I was able to sell items a lot quicker than I ever had with anything else (besides maybe Craigslist but there are so many lowballers on there).

After using it now for two months I’m a huge fan of the app, the community and how great and easy it is to use.

Do you use Poshmark? If not, join:

FYI: I don’t love my username but after creating it last year and starting my closet I found out you can’t change it once it’s created so I just kept it.
