Congrats to the Golden State Warriors!

April 13, 2016

I’ll start this by saying I’m in no way calling myself a Golden State Warriors fan. I can’t stand band wagon fans so I’ll say this now I’m a Sacramento Kings fan. Honestly I don’t watch basketball but since I was a kid my family has been Kings fans, so by default I’m a fan.  It’s my dad’s team and I’m from Sacramento bottom line. I won’t claim I know anything about basketball BUT there is no denying congrats are in order.

The Golden State Warriors won tonight’s game, ending their season 73-9 making history:

Golden State Warriors Complete Best Season In NBA’s 70-Year History

On top of that Steph Curry is a beast and hit a new record by being the first player in NBA history with 400 3-pointers in a season.

As a Bay Area resident I just have to say, way to go team. Bring home the championship. No hating from me.

Equal Pay Day

April 12, 2016

EQUAL PAY DAY turns 20 years old today. It’s a day that’s meant to highlight the fact that the average American woman has to work 15.5 months in order to earn the same amount of money that the average American man makes in 12. – Wired

While I’m happy to recognize that we need Equal Pay Now! I think the above image sums it up. It’s crazy to think that women are still not created equal in 2016. Rather than have a day to recognize the gap, I’d like everyday to be equal pay day so we can stop talking about it and just have it.

I read this article that was published last week: Why Being A Woman Can Cost You More Than $400,000.

According to a new analysis of the wage gap by the National Women’s Law Center, a woman who is starting her career now will earn $430,480 less than her male counterpart over the course of a 40-year career, if the current wage gap persists. For many minorities, the losses are even larger: African American women will earn $877,480 less over those 40 years, Native American women will earn $883,040 less and and Latina women will miss out on a whopping $1,007,080 in lifetime wages.

I’m happy that people like President Obama, Hillary Clinton, Jennifer Lawrence and the Women’s Soccer Team are speaking out and standing up for equal pay. They have the platform but all women need to realize that equal pay should be the norm.

Wizarding World Hollywood

April 7, 2016

In honor of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter Hollywood opening today, I wanted to share my experience previewing the Wizarding World (WW) for KPSC Family Night 2016 (#kpscfamilynight on Instagram if you want to see the photos). My best friend, Janni-lee (JL) is a “Potterhead” and works for Kaiser in San Diego so when she told me about the special preview as part of KPSC Family Night I knew we had to go. I’ve been wanting to see the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando for the longest but since I couldn’t make that happen this was the next best thing.

If you follow me on Instagram or Snapchat you may have seen my story but if not here are some of the highlights:

Kaiser arranged to close the park early so that employees and their family can enjoy the park for a private event and they allowed us to enter at 2:00 p.m. Since we thought that WW would be crowded we made sure to get there on time in case the lines were long (JL also went the weekend before with  her family and she said it wasn’t controlled so non-Kaiser employees were in WW and lines and wait times were super long). If you know the three of us, we’re all laggers and run on Filipino time so you know it was serious when we got there early. haha After getting our passes I wanted to do the obligatory pose in front of the large globe.

Universal Studios Hollywood

We headed straight to WW and to our surprise there wasn’t a line and it wasn’t crowded at all. Huge score for us. Seeing how amazing it looked I had to pose and take pics of so many things, which is out of character for all three of us. My husband and JL aren’t fans of taking pictures and I normally take pics of food and scenery. haha Before our visit I only watched the movies but I didn’t read the books so I didn’t consider myself a Potterhead but seeing WW, made me act like a total nerd about it.

There are only two rides but we got to experience Olivanders, which is a fun experience.

You first go into a staging area while you wait and once you go into the room, the wand employee chooses one person to go through the wand choosing ceremony. After that, they send you into the store where you have a large assortment of wands to choose from. Of course JL had to buy a wand. She bought Narcissa Malfoy’s wand.

I really wanted to buy one but given the cost and the fact that it would just sit in my apartment, I opted out and just borrowed hers for the photo op.

After purchasing the wand, we went on the “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey” ride, which is the castle. Got a pic with a one of the “cast mates” just because.

The inside of the ride was so cool. On the level of what Disney Imagineers do for my inner child. 2016-03-12 15.28.56

After we went on the Flight of the Hippogriff roller coaster, which was fun but very short and then we were done with the attractions. Given the space they were able to fit an amazing experience into a small area but it made me want more, which is why I still want to go to Orlando. I hear the rides are amazing there.

Since we were out of rides, we spent some time trying the Butter Beer and putting JL’s wand to use. She bought the one with the sensor that let’s you use it in the WW area.

Eventually we met up with friends (they ran on Filipino time) and got some snaps with them and did some rides together.

It was such a fun night. I know I overshared that night (I have a long Snap story to prove it) but that’s OK because I’m a kid at heart and anytime I can be carefree I’m happy.

Getting to go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter made me a fan and I think I’m going to give the books a try. I even went as far as joining Pottermore, doing the sorting ceremony to find out my house and doing the wand ceremony.

I’m a Hufflepuff:

Hufflepuffs value hard work, patience, loyalty, and fair play

and my wand is the Black Walnut wood with a Phoenix feather core 11″ and Hard flexibility:

Less common than the standard walnut wand, that of black walnut seeks a master of good instincts and powerful insight. Black walnut is a very handsome wood, but not the easiest to master. It has one pronounced quirk, which is that it is abnormally attuned to inner conflict, and loses power dramatically if its possessor practises any form of self-deception. If the witch or wizard is unable or unwilling to be honest with themselves or others, the wand often fails to perform adequately and must be matched with a new owner if it is to regain its former prowess. Paired with a sincere, self-aware owner, however, it becomes one of the most loyal and impressive wands of all, with a particular flair in all kinds of charmwork.

They’ve been doing soft openings for a while now, so you can Google it to see a lot more. Yesterday I saw Mindy Kaling and a bunch of other celebs got to enjoy the Wizarding World for it’s official grand opening. I think we’d be friends in real life. lol. If you haven’t been to Orlando I suggest you get to Hollywood but maybe wait until later this year because I hear the tickets sold out and people lined up early.

Snapchat 2.0

April 6, 2016

When it comes to social media I’ll try pretty much anything. I downloaded Snapchat back in May 2014 but like many others I had no idea what it was for so I didn’t really start using it until last year when my sister mentioned the story and I gave it another try. What I like most about it is the one on one interactions you have with people and that it’s a more casual and non-staged (mostly) platform. Here’s a great breakdown of how to use Snapchat by Wired.

My favorite features are the geofilters and the lenses. These are a few of my latest faves:

I don’t know who comes up with them, but there are some good ones. Snapchat users spend an average of about 30 minutes every day on the popular app, according to new data. Those are the basics but what I’m writing about today are the new features that were released last week. Here is the official blog: Snapchat 2.0 and here is the breakdown:

  • Auto-Advance Stories: Makes watching stories much easier. Each time you finish viewing a Story, the next user’s will now play automatically. Tap to click through, swipe left to skip to the next person, or pull down to exit.
  • Pictures: Selecting the picture icon above the keyboard allows you to send multiple images to your friends at once.
  • Chat 2.0: You can chat with a friend live, just start talking or start a video call. The video camera icon lets you video-chat with your friends. It’s like Skype plus more: Once the call starts, friends can simultaneously send texts, pictures, and audio messages within the same feed.
  • Stickers: Part of the Chat 2.0 are the plethora of stickers. The smiley-face icon on the right gives you access to 297 cartoon stickers.

With that they also updated their Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, which they say is “making some things clearer, and building foundations for awesome new products to come. Check out our new Privacy Center for more on that!”

Do you use Snapchat? If so, add me: ambrisshearts
